Marble Statues
The tragic nymph Salmacis….by Francois Bosio
The story behind this delicate and beautiful piece by Bosio, which Stone
Icons reprises in the finest white marble, and like many myths, is tragic.
It tells of Hermaphroditus (the son of Hermes and Aphrodite) travelling
in a wood wood where he encounters the beautiful nymph Salmacis in her
pool.
Salmacis is overcome with lust for Hermaphroditus, but he rejects her. She
leaves, and he undresses and enters the pool. Salmacis re-emerges and
wraps herself around Hermaphroditus, kissing him and calling on the gods
to blend their bodies into one intersexual form. And another myth is created.
An image of Salmacis has been taken over by the Monaco Television
Awards and is incorporated in the statuette given to winners.
The original sculpture was carved in 1826 and can be seen in the Louvre, Paris.
