La Danaide, Rodin’s iconic view of his lover for many years.
Auguste Rodin was in love with Camille Claudel and that love
shines through this iconic marble sculpture for which Camille
is believed to have modelled.
The flowing hair and the naked body of a young woman couched
in the marble base shows Rodin rebelling against the Beaux-arts
tradition in France, to create his own place in the history of art.
Now France’s most famous artist, Rodin was a pivotal force in
bridging the period from Romanticism to Impressionism. Rodin
was also a prolific painter and sketcher, but it is for his sculptures
that he is remembered and revered.
In La Danaide, Rodin created one of the most popular sculptures
in history, standing alongside his The Kiss and the Thinking Man.
La Danaide was a mythological figure, the daughter of King Danaos.
Stone Icons will carve the statue from the finest living white marble
as would Studio Rodin have done in the 19th century, for each art
connoisseur who acquires this masterpiece.
The original was carved around 1885 – 1886 and can be found in
the Musee Rodin in Paris.
