Marble Statues
The Shepherd Boy has been considered by many to be the most magnificent sculpture of the last three hundred years. The serenity, purity and simplicity of the subject is compelling, and yet its complexity leaves viewers astounded by the skill of the carving.
Stone Icons believes that the original sculpture by Bertil Thorvaldsen is exquisite, and it is our honour to recreate it in the finest white marble as an exact reproduction. Thorvaldsen made a sketch of a model sitting casually in his studio, and the dog was either his or a friend’s. We have researched the marble in minute detail, and our version is as if it had emerged from the master’s own studio carved by chisel from the raw marble block to find every detail modelled by Thorvaldsen.
Thorvaldsen’s studio was a highlight of the Grand Tour, and the Earl of Minto, a great art connoisseur visited regularly, attempting to buy the Shepherd Boy, but was thwarted at the last minute. He varied in his opinion about who was best in the competitive game played by Canova and Thorvaldsen.
Another version of this beautiful statue can be found in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.
