Marble Statues
Cupid and Psyche…..the greatest love story immortalised in marble
When Antonio Canova, perhaps the greatest of the Neoclassical sculptors, embarked on his epic journey to immortalise the love story of Cupid and Psyche, he could never have imagined the millions of people who would wonder at the beauty of his work in the Louvre or the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.
No-one can now own his originals no matter how wealthy they might be, but by finding a magnificent block of marble from one of the leading quarries in the world, Stone Icons can retrace Canova’s journey using the same methods he used – producing the clay model, carving the marble with chisels and then hand polishing the marble to achieve exactly the effect Canova sought and achieved. Always remember, this marble will remain perfect and inviolate for hundreds of years into the owner’s family history.
In Greek mythology, Psyche, the daughter of a King, was known to have unmatched beauty. Venus, the Goddess of Love was jealous and not amused. She dispatched her son Cupid to plunge an arrow into Psyche so that she would “marry the first brute she met”. The inevitable happened – Cupid fell in love with Psyche, plunged the arrow into his own flesh and elevated Psyche to Goddess status – the only human ever to become immortal.
The sculpture is of Cupid and Psyche with a delicate butterfly held between them.
