Ganymede offering water to the Eagle
Bertel Thorvaldsen drew the direct link to the Eagle in what is considered to be a masterpiece.
The God Zeus chose to abduct Ganymede using a powerful eagle, gaining the prize of the most perfect youth in Greek mythology.
In this sculpture, which Stone Icons reprises in beautiful white marble, Ganymede is seen offering water to the Eagle – which was a key symbol in Greek Mythology.
When Ganymede was abducted, the Gods were delighted to have this beautiful youth attend them as their water bearer.
In his writings, Homer does not dwell on the erotic aspects of this incident, but still refers to Ganymede’s blond Trojan beauty in the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite.
Ganymede was credited with the creation of mead, the intoxicating drink of the Gods and of the fountains of the Nile, that life-giving and fertilising river.
Thus grew the myth of Ganymede being the genius behind the supplying of the world with water.
